Canadian health data relies on national standards to ensure information can be consistently collected, understood, and used. This presentation provides an introduction to CIHI’s role in supporting standardized health information, with a focus on ICD-10-CA and CCI classifications and related tools. Participants will learn how these classifications contribute to Canadian health data, how they support the consistent collection of diagnoses and interventions, and how CIHI is modernizing its classification assets to respond to the rapidly changing clinical and technology landscape and user needs. The presentation will also introduce the Canadian Classifications Browser (CCB), a web-based tool that brings classification content, coding standards and related resources together in one place.

Renata Iannucci is a Health Information Management professional with 28 years of experience, including 15 years at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). As a Program Lead in Classifications and Terminologies, she leads the development and modernization of the Canadian Coding Standards and enhancements to ICD-10-CA to support pan-Canadian health data. She also oversees classification tools and products and contributes to the development and enhancement of ICD-11 through Canada’s participation in the WHO-FIC network.

Alana Lane has nearly 30 years of experience in Health Information Management and has dedicated her career to advancing health information standards, classifications and terminologies. She began her career as a clinical coder in Halifax, Nova Scotia, contributing to the transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CA. Since joining CIHI in 2009, Alana has held roles in Classifications and Terminologies and is currently Program Lead. She leads the development and maintenance of the Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI), client support, SNOMED CT mapping initiatives, and ICD-11 impact assessment work. Alana is passionate about improving the quality, consistency, and interoperability of health data to support better decision-making across Canada. She lives in Prospect Bay, Nova Scotia, where she enjoys coastal living.
